Broughtons Period Lighting and Ironmongery (based in Leicestershire, UK) who developed the BROLITE collection of Bakelite, are now reproducing an additional range of Bakelite door furniture incorporating the very clever PERMAX design from the 1930's. PERMAX Bakelite door furniture did not require conventional grub screws to attach the knobs or handles to the spindle.
Options are: Walnut or Black Bakelite, pair of door knobs, pair of lever handles or one handle and one knob. (The lever handle would be used on the outside of the room to give knuckle clearance, and the knob used on the inside of the room). In addition, we at Broughtons can also offer versions for bathrooms & toilets with a turn and an emergency release in various metal finishes to complement bathroom taps etc.
You will even be able to purchase a half pair for under the stairs doors or wardrobes etc. and also individual parts. Fixing screws will be included of course.
This fabulous 'BROLUX' range is now available on the comprehensive Broughtons website www.broughtons.com
The (all-important) brass flange
This is the clever device that allows BROLUX Bakelite door knobs and lever handles to be fitted to the matching BROLUX back-plate without the usual need for grub screws. This idea was originally patented in the 1930's by PERMA'. Something so simple, precision made from brass.
Lever handle
The PERMAX lever handle with lock plate. We will also be producing the same back-plate without the key-hole. (As far as we know, only versions with a key-hole were originally made as internal doors were commonly locked). BROLUX is being skilfully modelled on this, we at Broughtons are producing them in both Walnut and Black.
Door knob

Image illustrating the very clever PERMAX patented method of securing the knob or lever handle to the back-plate. Basically, the back-plate is trapped between bottom circular flange and knob whilst still allowing the spindle into the knob or handle.
BROLUX is skilfully modelled on this, we at Broughtons are producing it in both Walnut and Black.
Image showing the rear of the PERMAX back-plate, the threaded flange has been screwed in to secure the knob in place. The spindle is in place creating a BROLUX fitting.
BROLUX is skilfully modelled on this, we at Broughtons are producing them in both Walnut and Black.
The temporary images are of the original PERMAX pieces from the 1930's.
BROLUX by Broughtons is skilfully modelled on these originals in real Bakelite just like the originals.
BROLUX products are now available at Broughtons of Leicestershire U.K.
